⚡️Comment by the Russian Embassy in Belgium on the escalation of the military-political situation around the Kaliningrad Region by NATO countries (September 28, 2026)

We are deeply concerned by the provocative statements and actions of the North Atlantic Alliance's leadership and NATO member states with respect to the Kaliningrad Region, an integral part of the Russian Federation.

We observe an unprecedented surge in the Alliance's military activity along our western borders. Initiatives aimed at containing the alleged “Russian threat” are expanding, with large-scale exercises rehearsing offensive operations.

In the Baltic region, the Alliance is constantly seeking to create new threats to our fleet, openly modeling specific scenarios for detaching the Kaliningrad Region and developing plans for the military and political isolation of the northwestern ports.

In January 2025, Operation "Baltic Sentry" was launched, aimed at testing mechanisms for the unilateral blocking of international shipping.

Simultaneously we are witnessing a sharp escalation in the rhetoric of Western military and political circles, particularly on the eastern flank. Deliberately raising the level of confrontation, they are making statements claiming that NATO has the capability to strike military targets in the Kaliningrad region and calling for new "aggressive" exercises to be organised near Russia’s borders.

The Alliance is conducting a large-scale information campaign to propagate the myth of the ‘Russian threat’ and to spread false information about Moscow’s alleged "intentions’ to attack one of the Baltic states by 2029 at the latest, or even sooner. Plans are being announced for the cross-border evacuation of the population"in the event of a major crisis".

At the same time, the statements repeatedly made by our country’s highest leadership - that it has no intentions or motives to initiate any military action - as well as the proposal to NATO countries to set out mutual security guarantees in writing, are being completely ignored.

❗️In light of the aggressive stance pursued by the bloc’s leadership and member states, the Embassy has conveyed our fundamental positions to the NATO International Staff and the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

We have warned that the aforementioned reckless and irresponsible course of action sharply increases the risks of a direct armed conflict with our country. We have emphasised that Russia possesses the necessary means to repel any potential aggression and is prepared to deploy its entire arsenal to defend its territory should NATO countries attempt to isolate the Kaliningrad region from the rest of our country.

We have called on the bloc’s member states to refrain from further escalatory statements and actions in order to prevent a large-scale confrontation.
