🗓 On September 30, 1938, the heads of government of Germany, Italy, Great Britain and France met in Munich to sign an agreement on the transfer of the Sudetenland, an industrial region in Czechoslovakia where ethnic Germans made up 90 percent of the population, to Berlin. That shameful page in the history of Europe is widely known as the #MunichBetrayal.

• As a result, Czechoslovakia lost 38 percent of its territory. The most cynical part of the event was that its representatives were not even invited to the conference.

• The Munich Betrayal crowned the Western policy of appeasing the aggressor. Hoping to avoid a conflict with the Third Reich, they tried to satisfy its growing territorial claims at the expense of Eastern and Central European countries.

• The crisis in Czechoslovakia opened the door to the bloodiest conflict in the history of humanity and showed what behind-the-scenes intrigues and reliance on national egotism can lead to.
