A supertanker carrying crude oil that attempted to deviate from the authorized route in the Strait of Hormuz exploded after striking a naval mine in a designated high-risk area, according to the IRGC Navy's Public Relations Department.
The vessel had switched off its navigation and positioning systems and is now burning, with flames visible to coastal residents.
The IRGC Navy said the fire is the "inevitable consequence" for any tanker disregarding the strait's security and regulations.
