⚡️🇪🇺🇱🇧 — EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called for extending UNIFIL’s mandate, expiring December 31, to prevent a security vacuum in southern Lebanon before a new force can monitor the US-brokered Lebanon-Israel agreement. During her Beirut visit, Kallas stated member states oppose a security vacuum and view an extension favorably, noting the danger of a transition gap. An EU mission to train and advise the Lebanese Armed Forces and internal security forces on territorial control, border, and internal security is planned for formal establishment by EU foreign ministers. ➡️ Separately, Kallas announced the expansion of the EU’s Red Sea naval mission due to escalating war in Yemen and increased demand for ship escorts. Brussels urged member states to contribute more vessels; Belgium is deploying additional ships, and two other members are contributing or considering contributions. Kallas stated the mission requires at least 10 ships, a current shortfall, adding that maritime security is a priority.
