⚡️🇺🇸 — The Pentagon said the execution by firing squad of Nidal Malik Hasan, the Palestinian-origin former US Army psychiatrist who carried out the 2009 Fort Hood shooting, will be broadcast live. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the execution is scheduled for December 3 and: “we’ll make sure people can watch it, and that the event will be public.” Military-law experts said Hasan could resist execution and file a habeas petition in civilian court, potentially significantly delaying it. Hasan, then an Army major, entered a medical building where soldiers were queued for immunizations and deployment clearance and opened fire with a laser-sighted handgun, killing 13 people. — AFP/France 24
➡️ During the trial, it was revealed that Hasan had spent weeks preparing the attack, including being shown how to change his pistol’s magazine and later seeking advice at a gun range outside Austin on rapid, precise reloading; soldiers testified that his rapid reloading made the shooting extremely difficult to stop. Investigators recovered 146 shell casings inside the building and dozens more outside, where Hasan fired at the backs of soldiers fleeing toward the parking lot.
Hasan said he acted to prevent them from going to Afghanistan and killing fellow Muslims; a military judge barred him from presenting that as a defense. Representing himself, he made almost no effort to defend himself, told jurors the evidence would show he was the shooter and described himself as a soldier who had “switched sides.”
➡️ Hegseth said the military has not executed a service member by firing squad since World War II; the last military execution was on April 13, 1961, when Army Pvt. John Bennett was hanged.
