⚡️🇸🇦🇸🇾🇾🇪🇺🇸 — Saudi Arabia and Syria are discussing deploying Syrian troops to Yemen to reinforce the Saudi-backed counteroffensive against the Houthis, with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa reportedly seriously considering but not yet approving the move, according to three U.S. officials cited by Axios.
The Trump administration has been consulted by both governments and is reportedly not opposed in principle; one U.S. official said the issue was raised during Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s meeting with al-Sharaa in Riyadh earlier this week, with Riyadh seeking Syrian troops to reinforce Yemeni forces it considers less trained than the Houthis, and said al-Sharaa was highly likely to accept.
➡️ Washington reportedly views a Syrian deployment as strengthening the Saudi-backed operation without deeper U.S. involvement and potentially tightening ties between the two U.S. allies; two U.S. officials said CENTCOM was consulted on possible deployment arrangements.
A source familiar with the discussions said Syria could deploy 10,000–20,000 troops, with the 90th Division near Damascus and 84th Division in southern Syria near Sweida under consideration; the latter includes thousands of Islamist foreign fighters who entered Syria during the civil war to fight the Assad government under the HTS rebel umbrella.
