⚡️🇩🇪🇦🇿 — German authorities are investigating whether former Federal Intelligence Service (BND) chief August Hanning, arrested on suspicion of espionage and treason, had contact with an Azerbaijani intelligence operative, according to information obtained by Der Spiegel and reported by Reuters.
➡️ The investigation found that Hanning allegedly obtained around 2,000 classified documents through his former BND office manager, Manfred D., paying him for access. Hanning reportedly used the material—which included intel on Russia's military and Iran's nuclear program—to prepare a written analysis for a foreign intelligence service.
While prosecutors did not officially name the state involved, Der Spiegel identified the client as an Azerbaijani intelligence officer. The leak was discovered during a 2025 search tied to a separate child-abduction case involving heiress Christina Block.
