This Wednesday in KSE Mathematics Seminar:
“What mathematics are left for humans to understand? A case for diagrammatic calculus as a new approach to algebra, physics and computation”
Speaker:
Carlos Zapata-Carratala (University of Edinburgh and Wolfram Institute)
🗓When: September 30, 16:30–17:30
📍Where: KSE Campus Obolon, Oblonska Naberezhna 19, building 3, Room 3.1 or shelter under 3.1
Abstract:
We live in the computational era of mathematics: formalization systems (e.g. LEAN) are increasingly encoding known mathematical theories and automated theorem proving (e.g. via AI agents) seems to be already at the level of solving long-standing open problems. In the face of this reality, us mathematicians should be asking ourselves what our role will be in the coming years. In this talk, I will offer you my personal approach to this question and how that connects with my current research on diagrammatic calculus and hypergraph algebras. In particular, I will explain the connection between simple constructions in graphs (and hypergraphs) with well-known algebraic objects such as groups, rings, categories, etc., and I will discuss a recent discovery that axioms such as associativity, distributivity, etc. can be encoded (and classified) in terms of hypergraph diagrams. I will also mention the ramifications of these developments to other fields in physics and computer science.
