As Fourth Paradigm

Abstract: In recent years, some prominent researchers have argued that scientific methodology has evolved into three distinct archetypes: empirical evidence, scientific theory, and computational science. Now, we are at the beginning of a new era dominated by data-driven science. Along these lines, we concentrate on the role of mathematics in this paradigm shift. As a case study, we consider some bizarre features of high-dimensional data as well as some deterministic and stochastic approaches to dimension reduction.
