Announced roughly a year ago, MAPTISM is finally out
https://maptism.org

MAPTISM dot org serves as a repository for all Maptism maps, animations, threads, graphics and other materials, easily and quickly accessible in full resolution and also in "tiled view".

Currently host to a selection of curated maps, most with their respective articles and sources, over the coming days it will be updated to contain all Maptism maps and animations, as well as ported and reformatted twitter threads for easier viewing and reading.
~160 maps are on the backlog and will be ported over in the coming days.

The site also includes a Commission form for easier Commission processing and more information for what type of Maps and Services we are able to provide: its not just prehistory!

Right now, the main highlights are the Corded Ware and 2nd century Germanic threads ported over as well as the Mycenaean Maps.

Site launch is today.

It will have a selection of curated maps, most with their respective articles, sources and even a DOI; some of them older with their respective status indicators.

~160 maps are on the backlog and will be ported over in the coming days.

We're also stripping the "non-commercial" aspect of the licensing, and simply using CC BY 4.0 on the maps. Free for reuse, provided there is attribution.

A sneak peek of the WIP Corded Ware animation. Will only be posted here on Telegram until the Full Animation is posted elsewhere. Some incredibly interesting inferences can be made just from the geographic spreads of early sites

Corded Ware and Bell Beaker site Heatmaps
It is noteworthy that in Central Germany, and Bohemia, Corded and Beaker coexisted until the Unetice Culture formed. However in Southwest Germany and Bavaria, Corded and Beaker sites are mutually exclusive

Sampling Biases:
For Bell Beaker in some parts of Iberia (such as Catalunia), otherwise accurate.

For Corded Ware in Eastern Europe: there are likely more in the Baltic, Belarus, Ukraine and Russia; However not on a scale that would match Germany, Czechia, Denmark and Poland, so the overall image would not change dramatically.

People like this are the reason we're launching the site and minting a DOI for every up-to-date map in the first place.

Enough is enough!

The Greek Dark Ages: The Geometric and the steady recovery of Greek Civilization

During the Geometric Period, Greek Civilization recuperates and the population increases again, however still not to the levels of the Mycenaean. Iron completely replaces bronze in burials, and Greeks start to recolonise the Aegean and even set up settlements in Macedonia.

Despite being called the "Dark Ages", this period had all of the foundations for the succeeding Archaic Period fully established apart from Writing, and after 800bc, the Greek city states would recover the glory and splendour of Mycenaean Civilization and begin the Greek Colonization of the Mediterranean.

The aftermath of Mycenaean Civilization:
The Proto-Geometric and the Greek Dark Ages
The Geometric Period signals an uptick in Greek Activity after the Collapse of Mycenaean Civlization, with compass-drawn Geometric Pottery, showing an increase in sophistication despite the loss of Palatial Centers and Writing.

Cremation becomes the dominant burial form, starkly contrasted to the previous Inhumations of the Mycenaean. Iron starts appearing especially in the grave goods, and graves start to be more richly fournished than in the Submycenaean.

There is a recovery in Settlement-Density and growth in population compared to the previous period, however it still does not match the incredibly dense and urbanized Late Helladic IIIB durin the Peak Mycenaean.

The Proto-Geometric likely represents the Doric Domination over the Achaeans (and infact, a slight exclusivity between Submycenaean and Proto-Geometric sites is visible.)

The Ruins of Mycenaean Civilization:
The Submycenaean, Covering a short phase between 1100-1000bc, is the very last gasp of Mycenaean art and civilization, and the initiation of the Greek Dark Ages.
Writing had been Forgotten, Palaces were Abandoned, the incredibly rich Chamber Tombs of hte preceding period were replaced by more impoverish and simple Shaft Graves, and Wide-spread iron use is Introduced.

Interestingly, the Submycenean has an unbroken Continuity at Athens back to the LHIIIb, possibly being the last major center of the Mycenaean Civilization before becoming a vital part of the Proto-Geometric Phase of the Greek Dark Ages.

The Submycenaean Pottery exists contemporary to the Proto-Geometric Pottery, and might therefore represent the last Achaeans and their Settlements before the majority of them become Dorianized during the Geometric period.

This Period differs starkly from the incredible prosperity of the LHIIIb with an abandoment of the major palaces such as Mycenae, and consequently, a termination of use of Linear B script. With nothing to replace it, Hellenic Civilization entered a Dark Age in which the knowledge of writing was temporarily lost until the Archaic Period of 800bc.

Despite this, Mycenaean Civlization does not entirely collapse. Mycenaean Pottery diversifies greatly, the Civilization becomes overall more Depopulated than the preceeding period, and Pottery styles from the north start appearing in Mycenaean Settlements, however the Civilization continued on and we can not speak of Invaders from outside of Mycenaean Civilization being responsible for the destruction, but rather internal conflict.

The Decline of Mycenaean Civilization:
The LHIIIc, starting in 1210bc, is the period of Decline for the Mycenaean Civlization. The Trojan War is usually dated to the beginning of this phase (1190bc) corresponding to the Destruction Layer at Troy VII. This entire decline corresponds to the Late Bronze Age Collapse, which also saw the destruction of most of the Middle East apart from Egypt.
