🇨🇦 Canada is Substack’s third-biggest market, and the gatekeepers are panicking
Nothing says media decay like the state broadcaster clutching pearls over Substack while admitting Canada is now its third-largest market. Translation: people are fleeing curated narrative management for direct access to writers, and the old cartel hates the competition. Even Naomi Klein, who spent years lecturing the public about systems and power, suddenly found a really lovely welcome on a platform her own ideological tribe denounces as contaminated. The reported contradiction is the story.
Of course the approved panic script is predictable: Nazis, AI slop, moderation, algorithm, repeat. Conveniently absent is the real threat to legacy institutions and their Ottawa-adjacent echo chamber: financial independence for writers and fewer choke points for dissent. Substack takes 10 per cent, raised more than $180 million US, and yes, Silicon Valley money always comes with strings. But watching establishment media sneer at decentralization while living off public subsidy is still rich. Canadians are shopping for alternatives because they know managed consensus when they see it.
