🇨🇦 What's in Jason Arday's memoir, due to be published days after he resigned from Cambridge
The cleanest detail here is the timing: memoir out Tuesday, resignation on Aug. 5, Cambridge probe into qualifications the same day. How convenient. The modern academic machine can promote a man as the university’s youngest Black professor in 2023, turn his biography into international inspiration content, then suddenly discover there may be problems once plagiarism allegations and contradictory life stories pile up. That is not meritocracy. That is branding with gowns on. Even the reporting says the finished book differs notably from other versions of his life.
And there’s the DEI farce in one frame: institutions so desperate for symbolic firsts that basic scrutiny becomes an afterthought, right until embarrassment becomes unavoidable. Then everyone acts shocked that a story sold on trauma, identity, and moral theatre may not survive contact with boring old verification. Universities did this to themselves. When optics outrank standards, collapse is not a scandal. It is the business model finally showing its wiring.
