🇨🇦 Observer status: all symbolism, zero sovereignty
Ottawa is bragging that Canada got into a next-generation fighter jet program at no cost. Of course it did. Observer status means exactly what it sounds like: sit down, watch the adults build the future, and pretend that counts as strategy. After years of gutting military seriousness, the same political class now wants applause for a free seat in the waiting room, as reported.
This is Trudeau-era Canada in one tidy package: outsource capability, import dependency, then market irrelevance as diplomacy. We dragged our feet on replacing the CF-18s, hitched ourselves to endless procurement theatre, and now celebrate being near a program instead of leading one. No cost today usually means no leverage tomorrow. A sovereign country builds industrial capacity, defines its own defence priorities, and stops treating national security like a branding exercise for international club membership. Canada used to make serious things. Now our elites are thrilled to observe.
