🇨🇦 Peak Canada: 600 flights a day, and the people keeping them running are fighting over unpaid work
WestJet moves more than 70,000 passengers on some days, runs 600-plus flights daily, and still ended up in a showdown with 4,400 flight attendants over ground duties that the union says aren’t properly paid, as reported. That is the Trudeau-era service economy in one neat little package: endless slogans about workers, equity, and resilience, while basic compensation and operational competence fall apart right before a summer long weekend. WestJet issued a lockout notice, the union issued a strike notice, and ordinary Canadians get the usual reward for elite mismanagement: cancellations, delays, and a shrug.
This is what a hollowed-out country looks like. Sky-high costs, brittle infrastructure, corporate PR babble, and governments obsessed with climate theater and demographic engineering instead of making Canada actually function. The official line is that passengers will be refunded or reaccommodated as applicable, which is bureaucratic poetry for good luck. A serious country protects mobility as national infrastructure. Ours treats it like another disposable consumer inconvenience.
