🇨🇦 Midwestern Republicans blame Canada, level threats for drifting wildfire smoke
America has more than 1,100 wildfires burning, more than 400 in the Midwest, and yet the political theatre is to issue a FINAL WARNING TO CANADA. That is the level of seriousness on offer here. John James and Bernie Moreno are posturing about sanctions and accountability while conveniently skipping over Minnesota fires also feeding the smoke, as reported. Apparently sovereignty now means Washington gets to bark orders at Canada whenever weather crosses the border.
There is a real lesson here, and it is not the one these grandstanding Republicans think. A weak country gets blamed by everyone. Trudeau-era Canada spent years advertising itself as a soft post-national doormat, so now even allies talk like supervisors. Yes, Ottawa should manage Canadian land for Canadian interests, not for climate sermonizing or bureaucratic paralysis. But foreign politicians threatening legislation over smoke while their own country burns is pure empire reflex. If Canada had serious leadership, this kind of chest-thumping would be laughed out of the room, not treated as a cross-border policy discussion.
