🇨🇦 Ontario finally caves on securities turf war
After two decades of swagger about a national securities regulator, Ontario just folded and joined the provincial passport club it spent years resisting. Peter Bethlenfalvy is now calling this a national approach, because in Canadian politics a humiliating retreat becomes leadership if you smile at the podium. As reported, Ontario was the last holdout, and now publicly traded companies can use one primary regulator across provinces instead of wading through duplicated provincial nonsense.
The real indictment is bigger than Queen’s Park. Ottawa lectures endlessly about productivity, competitiveness and economic resilience while the country runs an internal maze that supposedly costs four to eight per cent of GDP, around $5,100 per Canadian every year. Brilliant system: import millions of people, jack up housing and services, then choke domestic investment with homegrown bureaucracy. Alberta and Quebec were right to guard jurisdiction from centralizing fantasies, but this patchwork should have been fixed years ago. Canada does not need more globalist summits and photo ops in Charlottetown. It needs a state that stops sabotaging its own economy.
