🇨🇦 Canadians leaders call on Ottawa to support national youth service programme with military training
The sharpest part is not the military training. It is the admission that Canada now produces young adults lacking skills, purpose, resiliency and belonging, and the same political class that helped wreck those things wants taxpayers to fund a state-managed fix. As reported, the ask is $18.75 million over two years for a voluntary program for ages 18-25, with basic military training followed by climate resilience, emergency preparedness and community service.
That tells you everything. Ottawa hollows out national cohesion, presides over workforce dysfunction, then repackages the cleanup as human infrastructure. Jean Charest and Christy Clark backing it is not exactly a grassroots stamp of trust. The pitch is sovereignty, defence readiness and social cohesion, but the managerial instinct is the same as always: centralize, subsidize, recondition. Canada does need stronger defence capacity and a generation that belongs to something real. But if the state is only interested once it can fold youth into climate programming and committee-approved nation building, then this is less national renewal than another elite repair job on a country their class helped destabilize.
