🇨🇦 $4.35B for 25 percent while your bill keeps climbing
Rogers just paid $4.35 billion for the last 25 percent of MLSE, valuing the Toronto sports empire at more than $17 billion, as reported. Funny how there is always limitless cash for arenas, media rights, ticket empires and shareholder fantasies, but consumers are fed lectures about tough market realities every time telecom prices stay absurd. Tony Staffieri calls it a defining moment. Sure. A defining moment in Canada’s oligarch economy, where one cartel owns the pipes, the content, the teams, the stadium and then pretends it is all about customer experience.
This is the Trudeau-era corporate model in miniature: fake competition, real consolidation, and endless applause from the same class that claims to care about affordability. Rogers now tightens its grip over sports, media and culture in the country’s biggest market while promising affordable options like a monarch tossing scraps. Sovereignty is not just borders. It is whether national life is run for citizens or for telecom barons packaging fandom, bandwidth and identity into one vertically integrated cash machine.
