🇨🇦 Canada builds the bridge, Washington controls the script
The sharpest part is not Pete Hoekstra denying that donations delayed the Gordie Howe Bridge opening. It is that Canadians are now expected to sit politely while a U.S. ambassador publicly manages the narrative around a bridge Canada paid for. Ottawa covered the full cost because Michigan would not, and now the grand diplomatic reassurance machine rolls in to tell us nothing political happened, as reported. Sure. Just another totally normal case where sovereignty means writing the cheque while someone else explains the terms.
This is the Trudeau-era legacy in concrete and steel: Canada finances strategic infrastructure, then behaves like the junior partner in its own national project. Cross-border trade matters, but so does national self-respect. Instead, our political class treats dependence as sophistication and foreign leverage as partnership. The same people who sermonize about rules-based order cannot even guarantee that a major border asset opens without whispers of donor politics and diplomatic cleanup. Banana republic energy, G7 branding.
