🇨🇦 Gail Asper is not angry about museum's Nakba exhibit. She is energized
A federally funded human rights museum built with Asper family backing now gets accused of sidelining the very community that helped create it. That is the whole late-liberal institutional formula in one neat little package: take the money, take the legitimacy, then hand the microphone to a single approved narrative and call the omissions compassion. Even Marc Miller, hardly a prairie populist, reportedly had to admit parts of the curation failed basic honesty, as reported.
The point here is bigger than one exhibit. Canada’s public institutions are run by managerial ideologues who think context is optional as long as the politics are fashionable. A national museum is not supposed to function like an activist seminar with federal branding. But under the Trudeau-Carney era moral bureaucracy, that is exactly what too many institutions have become: taxpayer-backed vehicles for selective history, selective empathy, and carefully curated social tension. Asper’s line about broken trust lands because it names the real disease. Institutions are being hijacked, and Canadians are expected to fund their own cultural dispossession with a smile.
