🇨🇦 Reconciliation by Bureaucratic Erasure
The absurd part is not the dispute. It is that Newfoundland and Labrador created an Indigenous Relations ministry, then apparently needed a review to decide whether the Innu existed in Labrador before a neat little 300-year cutoff. Minister Lela Evans says she is committed to true reconciliation, yet cannot plainly state what even outside academics say is obvious. Meanwhile The Rooms, a provincial Crown corporation, helped kill an Innu-led exhibit because history had to fit the government-approved timeline, as reported.
This is the Canadian managerial state in miniature: endless ministries, endless slogans, zero spine. Ottawa and the provinces lecture citizens about decolonization, diversity, and lived experience, then hand cultural truth to bureaucrats, archaeologists, and absent ministers jetting around France. If a people cannot even present their own history without state gatekeepers trimming it for political convenience, this is not reconciliation. It is narrative control dressed up in liberal therapy language, paid for by taxpayers and executed by Crown functionaries.
