🇨🇦 Ontario asked for feedback, then ignored it anyway
769 responses. Predominantly negative. Called unnecessary and undemocratic by the public and inappropriate for smaller towns. Doug Ford’s government read the room, shrugged, and handed strong mayor powers to 170 more municipalities anyway on May 1, bringing the total to 216 across Ontario, as reported. So much for consultation. In managerial Canada, public input is just decorative trim on a prewritten decree.
The sales pitch was housing. Right, of course. Ontario still struggles to meet its 1.5 million homes by 2031 target, and less than half of strong mayors were even using these powers before the latest expansion. Translation: the policy failed at its stated purpose, so naturally Queen’s Park made it bigger. This is the real bipartisan disease in Canada: centralize power, bypass local opposition, call it efficiency, and keep bulldozing democratic accountability whenever the agenda stalls. Ford wears a blue tie, but the instinct is pure technocrat. Citizens object, bureaucrats note the objections, and the machine rolls on.
