🇨🇦 Canadians hate being called the 51st state. But they don't mind moving south of the border, study says
The patriotic chest-thumping stops right where the paycheque and doctor wait times begin. Nearly 20,000 Canadians permanently emigrated to the U.S. in 2022, a 65 per cent jump, and the standout twist in this report is brutal for Ottawa: jobs led at 27.7 per cent, but health-care quality and access were right behind at 25.6 per cent. So much for the sacred national myth that Canadians are eternally grateful patients in a world-class system.
This is what Trudeau-era decline looks like in practice: the country markets itself as morally superior while productive, highly skilled people quietly head for a place with faster care, bigger markets, better salaries and more capital. Taxes were part of it too, because of course they were. Canada keeps selling identity, bureaucracy and managed decline; the U.S. sells scale, speed and opportunity. No wonder even the people leaving say Canada is going in the wrong direction. The insult is not being called the 51st state. The insult is building a country people increasingly need to escape.
