🇨🇦 No pen, no leverage, no plan
July 1 was the CUSMA extension deadline, and Ottawa’s line is do not expect drama. Of course not. When Mark Carney says he is not looking for his pen, what he really means is Canada is once again waiting for Washington to decide our economic breathing room. As reported, Canada and Mexico want the full 16-year extension, while Trump has floated yearly reviews and still has tariffs hanging over Canadian steel and aluminum.
This is the Trudeau-Carney legacy in one neat little package: hollow sovereignty, smug talking points, and total dependence on U.S. goodwill. Dominic LeBlanc gets a virtual call, Janice Charette calls the deadline a checkpoint, and the country is told annual uncertainty is no big deal. Meanwhile Washington’s list includes our censorship laws, liquor bans, and procurement rules. Maybe running Canada like a WEF compliance lab while gutting real domestic strength was not brilliant statecraft after all. A serious country does not downplay leverage it no longer has.
