π¨π¦ Ottawa sunsets a division, then calls it modernization
Canada just held a feel-good ceremony to deactivate the 5th Division in Halifax while insisting nothing is really being lost, just shuffled around under new commands, as reported. That is classic Ottawa management theatre: stand down a historic Atlantic command, keep the uniforms and speeches, and sell the downgrade as readiness for modern realities. Translation: more bureaucracy, less rooted regional capacity, and another layer of centralized control dressed up as reform.
They say the army is moving away from regional divisions toward mission-based structures while Carney waves around more than $1 billion for Gagetown, over $2 billion for Halifax and Greenwood, and a $63 billion defence budget. So after years of neglect, Trudeau-era decay, and scrambling to hit NATO targets, Canadians are supposed to clap because the same political class that hollowed out the forces is now rebranding the shell. Sovereignty is not a PowerPoint, and national defence is not a PR sunset ceremony on the Oval.
