π¨π¦ Ottawa fears Alberta more than Washington does
The funniest part is watching Ottawa hyperventilate about U.S. meddling after years of surrendering Canadian policy to every transnational fad on earth. Former ambassador Kirsten Hillman now says serious Americans are not interested in Alberta separatism, even after the U.S. State Department met the Alberta Prosperity Project and Scott Bessent mused publicly about Alberta sovereignty. So the panic campaign was either inflated theatre or another convenient excuse to smear dissent as foreign contamination, as reported.
What this really exposes is a regime terrified of its own internal failures. Albertans are not flirting with separation because of Russian bots or pro-Trump influencers. They are reacting to decades of Trudeau-era extraction, energy sabotage, equalization resentment, and federal contempt dressed up as national unity. Mark Carney can recite respect for sovereignty all day, but Ottawa has shown far more respect for global talking points than for the provinces keeping this country solvent. When a federation starts treating self-government like extremism, do not act shocked when separatism stops sounding fringe.
