π¨π¦ $800M pause, $18B replacement, same Ottawa incompetence
Canada just froze an $800-million Griffon helicopter upgrade because the project became too complex, after signing the contract in 2022 and a separate $2.2-billion sustainment deal in 2024 to keep these 1990s birds flying until 2039. Now the same federal machine that cannot modernize 82 helicopters wants Canadians to trust it with an $18-billion replacement program and bigger NATO commitments. DND says it is reassessing scope for best value, which is bureaucrat-speak for we lit more taxpayer cash on fire than expected, as reported.
This is late-stage Trudeau-era governance in one file: endless procurement theatre, sovereign capability hollowed out, and every decision filtered through alliance pressure instead of national interest. Ottawa cannot defend the country efficiently, but it can always find billions for managerial fog, consultants, and global posturing. The state that lectures citizens about resilience cannot even sort out mission-system computers on a fleet it already owns. A serious country would rebuild competence first and stop treating defence as a PR accessory for liberal internationalism.
