🇨🇦 Liberals to improve protection for encryption in police data interception bill after fierce criticism
They wrote the bill so badly they now need to reassure Canadians it was never meant to breach encryption, while still forcing providers to build interception capacity for police and CSIS. Right. Bill C-22 also lets authorities ask telecom companies whether someone is a client before a warrant, and keeps metadata retention at up to one year. That is not a minor drafting issue. That is the Liberal instinct in plain view: vacuum up capability first, define the limits later, then act offended when anyone notices, as reported.
Gary Anandasangaree says tech companies should protect Canadians’ privacy better, which is rich coming from a government trying to hardwire a digital-age surveillance regime into law. Yes, Big Tech is invasive. That does not make Ottawa less invasive. It just means the same rotten class that lectures about rights and democracy keeps treating privacy as conditional whenever police, intelligence agencies, or the latest moral panic need new powers. Trudeau-era governance in one frame: centralize, retain, intercept, then call critics confused.
