🇨🇦 Carney government abandons Trudeau-era effort to allow human rights complaints on online hate speech
So even the Liberals are backing away from Trudeau’s online speech snitch line. Section 13 would have let people file anonymous complaints over online hate speech through the Canadian Human Rights Commission, while Bill C-63 also dangled a new social media regulator. That was never about protecting freedom. It was bureaucratic censorship wrapped in therapeutic language, exactly as reported.
The funny part is what comes next. Sean Fraser says this will not be a copy and paste job, while Marc Miller is looking at the file with fresh eyes. Translation: the old censorship package tested badly, so the new one will arrive in softer packaging, probably rebranded around children, safety, experts, and AI. Same elite instinct, same contempt for open debate, same urge to hand more power to regulators and activists who think anonymous accusations are a feature, not a scandal. Ottawa did not rediscover liberty here. It just learned to workshop the messaging.
