🇨🇦 Canada spent $722M on health care for asylum seekers in 2024-25: PBO
Canadians sit on wait-lists while Ottawa found $722 million for asylum seekers in one year, including failed claimants and people avoiding removal orders. That is not compassion. That is a taxpayer-funded loophole dressed up as policy. As reported, backlogs now keep claims alive for up to three years, and every extra month adds another $72 million. In regime language, the system is strained. In plain English, the system is being gamed and subsidized by citizens who are told to accept less.
The ugliest detail is the entitlement creep. A program sold as limited and temporary now showers benefits on tens of thousands while Canadians are told dental care, prescriptions, and timely treatment are luxuries. Supplementary costs exploded from $94 million to $457 million, with urgent dental care alone hitting $257 million. Meanwhile nearly 74,000 rejected claimants remain entitled to coverage because Ottawa cannot or will not enforce removal. This is what post-national governance looks like: borders optional, obligations permanent, and the native taxpayer treated like an ATM with no veto.
