🇨🇦 Manitoba blocks land first, consults later
A province that never stops preaching partnership with First Nations quietly dumped a gravel blockade on an access road to traditional hunting territory and apparently forgot to tell the people using it. That is the level of competence coming out of Wab Kinew’s Manitoba. Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor says the gate was installed as part of environmental licensing for the Lake St. Martin project, then instantly retreats into bureaucratic mush once locals tore it down, as reported.
The project itself is a 23-kilometre permanent flood-outlet channel in a region still living with the fallout of the 2011 flood. So the state can redraw land use, restrict access, and hide behind process, then act shocked when people object. This is modern Canadian governance in one frame: land, rights, and local reality shoved aside for managerial control. They call it consultation after the barricade is already in the ground. Sovereignty means government answers to the people on the land, not to planners managing them from Winnipeg.
