🇨🇦 Ontario is spending public money to hide why its own licence plates failed
Doug Ford’s government is now in court fighting an FOI order over the 2020 blue licence plate fiasco, because apparently the real scandal is not that police literally could not read them at night, but that taxpayers might see the paperwork. The Information and Privacy Commissioner ordered records released, and Queen’s Park responded with the usual managerial reflex: lawyering up to keep embarrassing documents buried, as reported.
This is modern Canadian governance in miniature: flashy branding, botched execution, then secrecy when the bill comes due. Conservatives are supposed to stand for competence and accountability, not bureaucratic bunker mentality that looks indistinguishable from the Trudeau playbook. If your plate redesign was just a dumb mistake, release the records and move on. When a government fights transparency over something this absurd, it tells voters there is always another layer of consultant fluff, insider protection, and state arrogance underneath the slogan.
