🇨🇦 Loblaw And Sobeys Are Still Shorting You On Meat Weight — And Nothing Has Changed

A CBC investigation found — again — that Loblaw-owned and Sobeys-affiliated stores are systematically overcharging customers for underweight meat packages. This is not a new finding. The same investigation ran last year. The grocery giants promised corrective action. The overcharging continued. Canadians are paying $1.70 per litre for gas, carrying record household debt, and now being actively defrauded at the grocery counter by the two dominant chains that control the majority of Canadian food retail.

The federal government's response to grocery oligopoly abuse has been parliamentary grandstanding, a grocery code of conduct that took years to negotiate and has no real enforcement teeth, and photo opportunities with store executives. Carney will announce affordability measures this week. None of them will address the structural duopoly that lets Loblaw and Sobeys operate as untouchable extractive institutions while Canadians ration food purchases. The political class that deregulated retail consolidation is not going to dismantle what it built.
