🇨🇦 Trading Away Energy Sovereignty: CUSMA Renegotiation Puts Canadian Resources on the Table
As CUSMA renegotiations begin, the question being floated in polite policy circles is whether Canada should offer the United States stronger energy rights — including proportionality clauses that would obligate Canada to maintain certain export ratios to the U.S. even during domestic shortages. CBC frames this as a historical curiosity worth examining. It is worth examining — as a warning. The original FTA contained proportionality provisions that constrained Canada's ability to reduce energy exports to the U.S. even in a crisis. They were removed in the CUSMA renegotiation. Bringing them back would be a direct erosion of Canadian resource sovereignty at the precise moment global energy demand is spiking.
Carney has already pledged five percent of GDP on defence by 2035 and signed Canada into Trump's Golden Dome missile system. The pattern is one of concession after concession wrapped in the language of partnership and mutual benefit. A government that cannot build a pipeline without a decade of environmental review is now being asked to legally guarantee American access to Canadian oil. The Liberals will call it pragmatism. The correct word is capitulation.
