🇨🇦 Liberals Want to Restrict Social Media Access for Youth — The Same Government That Surveilled and Censored Adults
At their Montreal convention, Liberal members voted on whether the Carney government should impose age restrictions on social media platforms and AI chatbots for young Canadians. This from the party that gave Canada Bill C-11, the Online News Act, and years of state-funded CBC dominance — a government with an established pattern of deciding what Canadians should and should not access.
No one serious objects to protecting children online — but handing the Liberal Party new regulatory authority over digital platforms is not child protection, it is infrastructure for censorship with a sympathetic label attached. These are the same people who fund CBC to the tune of over a billion dollars annually and called independent online media a disinformation threat. Once you build the mechanism to restrict access by age, the mechanism exists. Governments do not build regulatory tools they intend to use narrowly. That is not cynicism — that is history.
