The “dead man’s hand” is one of the most famous hands in poker history.

According to legend, on August 2, 1876, while playing poker in Wild Bill Hickok was shot from behind in a saloon in Deadwood.

The hand he was reportedly holding consisted of:

♠ A ♣ A ♠ 8 ♣ 8

Since then, aces and eights have become known as the Dead Man’s Hand and remain one of the most recognizable symbols in poker culture.

The exact fifth card is disputed, but the aces-and-eights combination has endured in poker lore for nearly 150 years.
