🚂 Ruislip Lido Railway opens for a two-day special

📰 This weekend, the UK's longest miniature railway (with a track gauge of just 30.5 cm) is running trains every 15 minutes through woodland and around Ruislip Lido. Visitors can also check out the locomotives, join a depot tour, and browse the gift shop.

🇬🇧 Bank of England holds rate at 3.75%

📰 The BoE's Monetary Policy Committee voted 6-3 to keep rates unchanged, with the minority pushing for a 25bp hike to 4%. The call largely matched analyst expectations, even as inflation hit a 5-month high – UK CPI rose 3.1% y/y and 0.5% m/m in August.

ℹ️ Governor Andrew Bailey signaled a possible future hike amid energy market volatility, saying that for now rising energy prices have had limited pass-through to pricing and wage growth, but the longer this instability persists, the more it will feed into inflation – and the more likely a rate hike becomes to bring inflation back to the 2% target.

👂 A "quiet space" appears in the London Underground as part of a new trial

📰 Rush-hour crowds can be a real barrier for neurodivergent travellers. TfL, together with NOOK pod and the charity Autistica, has trialled a calm space at Ealing Broadway station – a small low-stimulation nook with acoustic shielding, soft seating and nature-scene panels, open until 2 October and accessible to wheelchair users, pushchairs and assistance dogs.

ℹ️ Autistica's research with neurodivergent people found that having somewhere quiet to retreat to can boost confidence and help people keep travelling independently instead of avoiding journeys altogether.

📍 A second calm space opens this autumn at the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden, as part of TfL's £3m-a-year, five-year accessibility push.

🪧 London locals fight back against AI data centre

📰 Residents near Brick Lane, East London, are protesting a 5,200 sq m data centre planned for the historic Truman Brewery site: citing noise, ugly design, and heavy water/power use (as much as 15,000 homes) amid the city's worst drought in decades.

👌 The UK government approved it anyway, overruling Tower Hamlets Council and the Save Brick Lane campaign, saying economic benefits outweigh the downsides:

• Mayor Lutfur Rahman: the centre will do nothing for "the activity, vitality and character" of the area.

• Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook: it'll give City of London traders faster, lower-latency connections.

🚌 New Superloop route SL12 launches in September and free for the first week

📍 TfL's newest Superloop express service, the SL12, hits the road on Saturday, 5 September, connecting Gants Hill and Rainham. To celebrate, journeys will be free for pay-as-you-go passengers during the launch week.

🗺 The route slashes journey times from just over an hour down to 40-45 minutes, passing hospitals and stations on the Central, District, Overground and Elizabeth lines, plus a connection to the SL2 Superloop at Gants Hill.

🎉 Notting Hill Carnival kicks off this weekend

Сolourful but notoriously risky.

ℹ️ London's City Hall has allocated £4.66 million for extra security in 2026. Founded in 1966 to unite a community torn by racial tension, the Carnival has grown into one of the world's biggest street festivals, bringing London's economy around £400 million a year.

⚠️ But Londoners know the drill: think twice before going, especially with kids. Robberies, fights and unrest are common enough that locals and business owners often board up windows and leave town until it's over.

👮‍♂️ In 2025: 528 arrests, 2 stabbings, 55 police officers assaulted.

🤞 This year's extra funding means over 1,000 more security staff, new barriers, and better Wi-Fi for coordinating security services.

🎾 London's only full-size indoor skatepark to close for padel

📍 Barking's Better Extreme – London's last full-size indoor skatepark – closes 2 August to make way for padel courts. Operator GLL says the park has run at a loss every year of its 13-year existence, and visitor numbers dropped 25% in the last year alone.

🪧 Locals aren't convinced: a petition to save the space has passed 2,800 signatures, and campaigners say GLL never properly consulted the community. The council has no power to stop the closure. Another indoor skate space lost to the UK's fastest-growing racquet sport.

📰 The Great River Race is back in September 2026, turning the Thames into one of London's most spectacular sporting events.

📍Hundreds of crews race from Ham in Richmond to Greenwich, passing under 28 bridges in traditional rowing boats – from Chinese dragon boats to Irish currachs. No engines, just oars, teamwork, and the river's current.

🏰 Water is returning to the Tower of London's moat for the first time in almost 200 years

📰 London has approved a major restoration project that will bring water back to the Tower's moat, dry since the 1840s. Tower Hamlets Council greenlit the plan by Historic Royal Palaces, aiming to revive the fortress's historic look while creating a new green space for nature.

ℹ️ Currently an open grassy area, the moat will be transformed with ponds, wetlands, meadows, rain gardens, and native planting to boost biodiversity and manage rainwater. The project also includes memorial installations for WWI and WWII, an educational space for schoolchildren, and new public areas — fed in part by a 19th-century rainwater collector.

📍The moat's transformation is part of a £70 million modernization of the Tower, which will also bring new education centers, public spaces, and access to the fortress's architectural archive.

🌘 Sky Show: Britain gears up for a deep partial solar eclipse

☀️🌑 Mark your calendars — this is a once-in-a-generation view from British skies.

📰 On 12 August, the UK will witness its deepest partial solar eclipse in almost three decades. Across most of the country, the Moon will cover around 90% of the Sun, with the effect even more dramatic in Cornwall and Pembrokeshire, where coverage will reach roughly 95–96.5% of the solar disc.

ℹ️ The Royal Observatory Greenwich has published a minute-by-minute schedule of the Moon's transit between the Earth and the Sun. Health experts remind everyone: never look directly at the eclipse without proper eye protection – certified eclipse glasses are a must.

📚 J.K. Rowling could get a payout from the largest AI copyright settlement ever

📰 Anthropic has agreed to pay $1.5 billion to settle a lawsuit over using pirated books to train its Claude AI – now finally approved by a U.S. court.

🔹 The deal covers ~482,000 works, including 14,087 titles from Bloomsbury (Rowling's publisher, also home to Sarah J. Maas and Susanna Clarke). Each title gets ~$3,000, split between author and publisher. It's unclear if the Harry Potter books are included — Rowling hasn't commented.

🔹 Filed in 2024, the case is being called the largest copyright recovery in U.S. history, and one of the first major AI-vs-authors settlements.

🎵 London's getting a free jazz jestival

📰 Ronnie Scott's – London's legendary jazz club – is throwing a free street festival in Soho on August 1st. Two open-air stages on Frith Street, five hours of live music, DJ sets and jazz for everyone. 🆕 A once-in-a-lifetime collection of ancient Egyptian treasures has arrived in London for the first time

📍 NEON at Battersea Power Station

📰 After a five-year world tour taking in Paris, San Francisco, Sydney and Tokyo, "Ramses and the Pharaohs' Gold" has arrived at a brand-new venue at the historic Battersea Power Station. More than 180 original treasures, each over 3,000 years old, are on loan directly from the Egyptian Museum in Cairo — in the UK for the first and only time.

ℹ️ Highlights include the original coffin that once held the mummy of Ramses II, along with sarcophagi, animal mummies, royal masks, jewellery and amulets, many of which have never left Egypt before. Ramses II ruled Egypt for nearly 67 years and is remembered as the warrior-king who helped define the height of Ancient Egyptian civilization.
