In 1437 a man was on a boat between Constantinople and Venice when an idea arrived that he had been chasing for years. He called it learned ignorance.
The idea: at the absolute limit, the maximum and the minimum are the same thing. A top spinning at infinite speed appears perfectly still. The largest circle has a circumference indistinguishable from a straight line. The hottest fire and the coldest void meet somewhere beyond where measurement can follow.
He spent two more years writing it down in a town called Kues. The book reorganized European philosophy. The idea came on the water. It always comes on the water — when you stop looking and let the current carry you.
