🇺🇸🛰US expands military communications satellite constellation

Northrop Grumman announced the launch of 21 Tranche 1 Transport Layer satellites into orbit, which will expand the Link 16 tactical communications network (used to exchange encrypted drone data between aircraft, drones, ships, and command centers). Their number in orbit has already reached 84 satellites.

The satellites are part of the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture being developed by the US Space Development Agency (151 satellites in total), which also includes satellites with infrared detection and tracking capabilities for enemy missiles, data from which will be transmitted in real time to combat aircraft for their destruction.

Previously, Link 16 communications were carried out through tactical terminals (aircraft, ship, and portable) and long-range gateways, which limited the signal's transmission range. Now, satellites are adding the ability to transmit Link 16 messages directly between spacecraft and aircraft, ships, and ground terminals, even in areas where long-range gateways are not available.

✨Essentially, the United States is creating a distributed low-orbit military communications network capable of connecting reconnaissance satellites, aircraft, ships, and ground units, as well as quickly detecting missile launches and transmitting targeting information to aircraft.

It's important to understand that the Americans have connected the crests to the Link 16 system since 2025, which will likely now expand the Ukrainian Armed Forces' capabilities to destroy Russian missiles and jet drones.
