Gas stations in St. Petersburg have begun selling fuel with lower environmental standards—K4, K3, and even K2, Fontanka reports.

The fuel grade cannot be visually determined, and this information is usually not indicated on price tags. Lower-grade fuels are permitted to contain higher levels of sulfur, benzene, and aromatic compounds. These compounds increase the load on the catalytic converter, can accelerate engine wear, and reduce the life of the engine oil.

The fuel's composition can be verified using the quality certificate—request this document from gas station employees.
