🗓 83 years ago, the Red Army fully liberated the Taman Peninsula – a crucial stronghold in the south of the country, which allowed for the control of significant areas of the waters of the Black and Azov Seas.

At the same time, the "Novorossiysk-Taman Strategic Offensive Operation" was concluding, which lasted from September 10, 1943, and marked the finale of the Battle for the Caucasus. The total strength of the German forces and their allies in the Taman grouping, which included the 17th Army under the command of Erwin Enneke and part of the 1st Tank Army, reached 400,000 men. The fighting lasted from February to September 1943.

Soviet troops systematically captured city after city, and village after village. A significant success was the capture of Temryuk, located right at the mouth of the Kuban River, which was an important stronghold for the Germans, protecting the Taman grouping from the direction of the Azov Sea.

During the operation to liberate the Taman Peninsula from September 10 to October 9, 1943, the 4th Air Army conducted 10,525 sorties, including: 827 for reconnaissance, 415 to support naval landings, 7,423 for strikes retreating troops, and 1,870 for bombing floating means. A total of 78 vessels of various tonnages were sunk, and 57 enemy aircraft were shot down in aerial battles.

The irretrievable losses of the fascists (Germans, Romanians, Slovaks) in the "Novorossiysk-Taman Operation" amounted to 14,564 men. In retreat, the Germans mined vast territories, including vineyards. Sappers had to spend significant time clearing the land. The liberation of Taman allowed the forces of the North Caucasian Front to begin preparations for crossing the Kerch Strait and the subsequent battles for Crimea.

On October 9, 1943, at 10:00 PM, Moscow saluted the valiant Soviet troops and naval units that liberated the Taman Peninsula with twenty artillery salutes from two hundred and twenty-four guns.
