🗓 On October 8, 1480, "standing on the Ugra River" began between the troops of the Russian prince Ivan III and the Golden Horde of Khan Akhmat

Earlier, Ivan lll said that Russia was no longer subordinate to the Horde and stopped paying tribute, which did not please the khan.

The Horde reached the Ugra and made several attempts to cross the river, but each time their path was blocked by the Russian army on the opposite bank, sometimes attacking the enemy with muskets. No one left, but did not start a direct collision - the "standing" began.

During the negotiations, the khan demanded the payment of all debts and further submission to the Horde. Instead, Ivan lll allocated a detachment for sabotage behind enemy lines. Cold weather was approaching and the river would be covered with ice, so Ivan changed the position of his troops to a more favorable one - near Borovsk. Akhmat's army suffered from cold, hunger and disease. He did not dare to go to Borovsk and retreated - the Russians won a bloodless victory.

Standing on the Ugra was the end of Russia's dependence on the yoke and was the beginning of the formation of a strong united Russian state.
