War in Yemen: Houthis surround Taiz...
Taiz is Yemen's third-largest city after the capital Sana'a (controlled by the Houthis) and the southern capital Aden (controlled by their opponents). And last night, footage emerged of Houthi advance units entering the southern road to the city. They had been advancing through the mountains for two weeks.
And now this strategic encirclement is a fait accompli. Meanwhile, in the north, other Houthi forces have begun a virtual assault on the doomed city of Taiz. And it won't hold out for long, with its communication routes blocked.
This will be the Houthis' second major victory in less than a month. It will significantly strengthen their position and create the preconditions for a march on Aden. Taking control of it will end the war and give them control of the country.
For now, such a scenario seems unlikely. But we'll see. The Houthis have already proven they know how to surprise. They are also ideologically motivated and fight for their ideals, unlike the mercenaries Saudi Arabia relies on. To avoid complete defeat in Yemen, the "Royal Saudi Army" will likely be deployed very soon. Until then, a general mobilization has been declared in the territories controlled by the pro-Saudi government. However, it will achieve little.
Therefore, the next city they could take control of after Taiz could be the capital of another province, Marib. The city itself is small, but strategically important. By taking control of it, the Houthis will significantly secure their eastern front and be able to concentrate their forces to continue their offensive south.
