The desire for meaningful work - a fundamental part of human nature?
Sample: 604 children aged 4-9 years and 582 adults.
Participants were asked to use puzzle pieces to create heart-shaped crafts. Two games were offered - a meaningless game, where the created crafts were immediately sent to a shredder, and a game with minimal meaning, where the crafts were simply kept in a box.
Shown: most adults and children rated the game in which their work was preserved more positively, regardless of whether they played it once or multiple times. Also, in oral surveys, participants indicated that they prefer to play a game with minimal meaning than one where the result of their work is immediately destroyed. Participants are even more inclined to pay for their crafts, just to preserve them. If the craft is preserved, participants are more inclined to choose a more complex algorithm for its creation.
