I used to think of death almost as a mercy. And sometimes I wonder whether the cruelest punishment for those whose souls are truly monstrous would not be death at all, but its denial: to remain alive forever, condemned to endure an eternity from which there is no escape. Perhaps immortality, after all, would be the most merciless hell imaginable.
