#Prophetic - Jehu: God’s Anointed Instrument Against the House of Ahab and Jezebel.

During the reign of King Ahab and his wife Jezebel, Israel sank deep into Baal worship. Jezebel actively promoted idolatry, sponsored hundreds of Baal prophets, and systematically persecuted and killed the prophets of the Lord (1 Kings 18:4, 13; 21). Through Elijah, God had already pronounced judgment: the house of Ahab would be cut off, and dogs would eat Jezebel in the territory of Jezreel (1 Kings 21:23).

The Anointing of Jehu…

God had earlier instructed Elijah to anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel (1 Kings 19:15-17). Years later, Elisha sent one of the sons of the prophets to Ramoth-gilead with a flask of oil.

He found Jehu among the army commanders, took him into an inner room, and poured the oil on his head, declaring:
“Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I anoint you king over the people of the Lord, over Israel. You shall strike down the house of Ahab your master, so that I may avenge the blood of My servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the Lord, at the hand of Jezebel. … And the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the territory of Jezreel, and none shall bury her.” (2 Kings 9:6-10)

Jehu’s fellow officers recognized the word as from the Lord and immediately proclaimed him king.

Jehu rode to Jezreel.
When King Joram (Ahab’s son) asked, “Is it peace, Jehu?” he answered, “What peace, so long as the harlotries of your mother Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so many?” He killed Joram and also Ahaziah of Judah.
When Jezebel heard of his approach, she painted her eyes, arranged her hair, and looked out the window, taunting him as “Zimri, murderer of your master.” Jehu called, “Who is on my side?” Two or three eunuchs responded. He commanded, “Throw her down.” They did; her blood spattered the wall and the horses, and he trampled her underfoot. When they later went to bury her, they found only her skull, feet, and palms of her hands.

Jehu declared:
“This is the word of the Lord, which He spoke by His servant Elijah the Tishbite: ‘On the plot of ground at Jezreel dogs shall eat the flesh of Jezebel, and the corpse of Jezebel shall be as refuse on the surface of the field… so that they shall not say, “Here lies Jezebel. 2 Kings 9:30-37

Jehu continued the purge: he had the seventy sons of Ahab in Samaria executed, destroyed remaining relatives, and then gathered the prophets, priests, and worshipers of Baal under the pretense of a great sacrifice. He ordered them slaughtered and demolished the temple of Baal, turning the site into a latrine. Scripture records: “Thus Jehu wiped out Baal from Israel” (2 Kings 10:18-28).
