Amanda spent the first ten years of her life in an orphanage. She never quite fit in.
The other children considered her strange.
Amanda would occasionally stare at empty corners of rooms. She would answer questions nobody had asked.
She learned that it was easier to remain quiet than to explain something nobody else could hear

On Amanda's tenth birthday, A wealthy family chose her.
They weren't particularly interested in her being "normal."
They simply saw a quiet, intelligent child who seemed strangely observant.
Amanda was taken into their home and introduced to a completely different life.
Large rooms. Expensive clothes. Private tutors. A comfortable bedroom.
Everything she could possibly have wanted.
For a while, Amanda was happy.
Then her new family began noticing something.

Amanda continued pointing things out.
Except now, she was doing it around people who could afford to investigate her claims.
She would mention things nobody had told her.
She knew details about people she had never met.
She occasionally described places she'd never visited.
And sometimes she'd casually mention someone who was supposed to be dead.
Her family became concerned.
They assumed something was wrong.
Perhaps Amanda was imagining things.
Perhaps her experiences at the orphanage had affected her.
Perhaps she was struggling to adjust to her new environment.
So they sought professional help.
Amanda saw psychologist after psychologist.
Then another.
And another.
Her family offered her every form of help they could find. They bought books. Found specialists. Changed therapists.
Tried different approaches.
Amanda hated it.
Not because she disliked psychologists themselves. She hated constantly being treated as though she were something that needed to be fixed.
The problem was simple, at least from Amanda's perspective.

Eventually, Amanda stopped fighting the voices.
Instead, she learned how to distinguish them.
Some voices were faint.
Some were loud.
Some appeared only in particular places.
Some repeated the same words.
Some spoke in fragments.
Some didn't seem to realize they were dead.
And some knew exactly what had happened to them.
Amanda learned that the dead weren't necessarily helpful.
They could be confused.
Bitter.
Unreliable.
Secretive.
Sometimes they lied.
Sometimes they remembered things incorrectly.
So Amanda had to learn something more important than simply hearing them, She had to learn how to investigate

As Amanda grew older, she began putting her ability to good use.
She became a private detective and investigator.
At first, people came to her because of her reputation for noticing details other investigators missed.
Then her reputation grew.
Amanda could find connections nobody else could.
She could discover information that wasn't publicly available.
She could sometimes identify the last person a victim had spoken to.
She could locate missing objects.
She could uncover hidden motives.
And occasionally...
She could ask the dead themselves.
She never tells every client how she solves her cases.
In fact, she has become very good at making her supernatural ability look like ordinary deduction

In Amanda's eyes, she has never failed a case.
That's not necessarily because every mystery has an easy answer.
Some cases take months.
Some take years.
