During his 2024 campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly claimed he could end Russia’s war against Ukraine within 24 hours.

On Friday, Trump announced an agreement with Vladimir Putin for Russia to supply diesel to the US and global markets, and publicly thanked the Russian president.

The following day, Trump said Ukraine needed a new president and announced what he described as an energy ceasefire between Kyiv and Moscow. However, Russia had breached the truce almost immediately, striking Ukrainian thermal power plants.

“If Russia does not agree to an energy ceasefire, we will respond,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.
