Brian Donelan, VP Cloud Platform Engineering @ JPMorganChase, explains the technical implementation of his custom CloudWatch metric that enables KEDA to scale Kubernetes workloads based on MacBook screen lock events.

Brian demonstrates how KEDA queries this metric every 60 seconds (configurable via the polling interval in the KEDA scaled object manifest) and provides a real-world example showing laptop state transitions over time. This approach showcases how to create custom leading indicators for Kubernetes autoscaling beyond traditional CPU and memory metrics, enabling true event-driven elasticity for cost optimization.
