my review of βmaybe in another lifeβ by taylor jenkins reid π©πΌβπ¦½ββ‘οΈπ«
perfect. beach. read. would i say this is TJRβs best work? absolutely not. this kinda felt like watching her figure out her writing style in real time #jinx_reads
and!! you can definitely tell this was written by a millennial πͺ idk what it is but they always have this zest to them HAHHAHA
like every character has to be quirky, every conversation has to be witty, and every thought has to be profound. girl we get it π
the main characterβs quirks were mentioned approximately 333 times and the attempts at being witty eventually became more eye-roll inducing than charming
BUT i did love the premise. the whole idea of seeing how one decision can completely change the trajectory of your life?? it makes you wonder about all the different versions of your life that couldβve existed.
and i think the biggest takeaway was actually quite comforting: there isnβt necessarily a βrightβ choice. whatever path you take, youβll eventually find a way to be okay
TJR was playing with such an interesting idea - life on both sides of the coin - but imo the execution was kinda way off :( i just wish the story had explored its own premise more deeply because it had SO much potential.

but reading, much like everything else, is subjective. not every book i love by an author is gonna connect with me, and thatβs okay.
